Edit- Today, my brother told me that he is going to watch Neerja and I must not miss the movie as reviews are awesome. I told that I'll watch it with Mom when I would go home.
He called after the movie to tell me that the movie was really good, but it's heartbreaking, you must watch this but please don't go with Mom as it is too emotional for her. She will be in tears throughout the movie.
He left me wondering about the fate of good movies. I am sure this movie will be a hit and would be remembered for long time after all, it's based on the real life story of a brave heart who lost her life to terrorists on the line of duty on the Aircraft.
Still, the movies with less sense but popular stars earn much more money than they deserve. It's a Popularity Circus.
It is a psychological pattern that we don't share anything that is heartbreaking at the same rate as you would share a hilarious joke that split you into laughter. You must acknowledge that it's a pattern...which is often at play and prevent movies like Lunch Box from earning lots of money.
My take on this question might blow your mind. I am going to tell something which will not make sense. Still, surrender your complete attention to me for a couple of minutes.
- In general, people like stuffs that are easy going.
- People like going behind big names.
- No matter how hard I cry that good movies die at box office while mediocre one like Happy New Year goes to make hell lot of money. The business of Farah Khan will keep on increasing. Huhh...
- Isn't it an irony that Deepika Padukone has admitted that she was underdepression while shooting for the movie, Happy New Year.
- Our generation likes critically acclaimed movies like Lunch Box. Irfan Khan is a rockstar for me. He is above all the Khans in my opinion. So what? It's just my opinion.
Forget movies, I am giving you link to my 3 answers, which will you read? I'm not talking about any individual but the answer that's short, sweet and make them laugh will be a winner. I write about serious stuffs full with learning but it fails to connect with masses. The easy going contents which are like fast foods sell like hot cake.
Reasons for the audience at a Knowledge sharing site to like content of less value.
- We are human and enjoy when something validates our belief.
- If you like Modi and I gave an amazing answer about how great he is then I am destined to be bombarded with upvotes.
- I know that Flipkart is an underdog on Quora and Real Life and still I wrote about a good act of Flipkart. It got around 500 upvotes and few strong negative feedback from people who took that as a insult for their loving Amazon. I also love Amazon but I write what I feel. I observe a lot and at different levels. Upvotes are nothing but a benchmark of popularity.
- We all have been on Facebook (I was active till June,15) but we bash Facebook on Quora. Most of us did that. We unknowingly felt for a moment that Quora is good and Facebook is bad. Life is a journey. When we were using Facebook, people on Quora in 2010-15 might be thinking about us in the same way.
- The more we know about human psychology, the more we understand myths that we believe are truth.
Less Deserving Movies are made because most of the people like to go to watch movies that doesn't stress their mind. I'm not one of them as I rarely go to watch a movie unless it is compelling. If you go every weekend for movies then most likely you like to unwind with a movie that is easy going and probably that's why commercial movies mint money.
There is an exception to every rule. Every individual is different. Whatever I wrote might be rubbish for one and quite refreshing for someone else. As a writer and a person who study human behaviour, my aim is not to push the beliefs that are popular. Hope, this write up make some sense. Do let me know in comments
I also have to convince my mind to read serious stuff because our brain by default likes the path of least resistance.
Now, which one you would like to read:
- A long post about my brother who is honing his programming skills at Bangalore. I took me 3 hours to write and is one of the best things I've ever written. I shared this with my brother who told that it was a masterpiece that left him in tears. Jobless not Worthless (3 upvotes)
- A beautiful write-up within 1oo words that would make you smile but won't have much nutritional value- I like this answer as it's also my baby. It's a honest answer and do keep in mind that the advice is from someone who has never impressed girls in school, college or anywhere else. Though, people have been impressed with me for reasons best known to them. Rohan Sinha's answer to How to impress girls in school? (2434 upvotes)
See the verdict on Quora which is a place for intellectual discussions and knowledge sharing. My answer with 2434 upvote was framed in 5 minutes and has little value in terms of knowledge.
Comparing my Quora answers/posts is one among 40-50 such examples, So, please don't think that it's a stand alone case.
